DIY Closet Room on a Budget

When we found out we were moving this last time, I knew I wanted to make a small space my own, other than my office. I kind of have what some may call a shopping addiction, although I prefer to think of it as stimulating the economy. I love clothes, shoes, purses, make-up… you get the point. Ya girl’s got a lot of stuff… A DIY Closet Room? On A Budget? Keep reading!

So when we found our town home with an extra room in the basement, we thought it would be my office/closet room. However once we got into the home and I was actually standing in it, I didn’t like it. There were no windows, the walls were blue (we’re renting and I didn’t feel like painting based on how long we’ll be here), and it just felt cold and dark. Not exactly my vibe.

So we tried a few different things but eventually decided on making half of the bedroom into the closet room. As you can see, the room is pretty big to begin with so making this small area my closet room didn’t take away from it.

At first, all I knew was that I wanted shelves for my shoes. I had seen it somewhere on Pinterest and thought it adorable. To make it affordable, I purchased these Billy Bookcases from Ikea for $69.99 each. At first I was only able to fit 4 pairs of shoes on each shelf but once I turned every other pair around, I was able to fit 5. I store all of my heels and then alternate my boots/sandals depending on the season.

I also put my flat sandals in this crate so they wouldn’t need to take up space!

Next I wanted somewhere to store sweaters and extra clothes. We have a pretty big closet but like I already said, homegirl has a lot of stuff. This Brimnes Wardrobe with 3 doors was perfect! It has hanging space on one side and shelving on the other. Priced at $149 and the quality is phenomenal!

The next piece is probably one of my favorite pieces because it’s seriously so versatile. We have 3 of these Kallax shelving units ($64.99) and they all look completely different. You can purchase different baskets, drawers, shelves, etc to customize them for your needs. We decided to go with 4 drawer units (each with 2 drawers) and 4 doors. This way I could have space for taller items or other storage containers.

I purchased the little white baskets and acrylic trays (these are new and even better) at The Dollar Tree and they do the job just fine. I found this light-up mirror on clearance at Kohl’s and a lot of the trays and holders pictured at places like HomeGoods, Marshall’s, and T.J. Maxx. Those stores are addicting (as is Ikea) but you can find so many good things. Just takes some time to look!

This mirror from Kirklands was in our old room and less than $50. Being somewhat lazy, I do my make-up while sitting right here. The rug is from Ikea ($14.99) and the tray holding my make-up is also from there. I keep all of the hair products I use and my blow dryer, curling iron, etc in the basket.

My necklace holder was handmade by my mother-in-law (so talented, right?!) She used a picture frame, decorative radiator grate, screw hooks, and then S hooks to hang the necklaces. I store my other jewelry on a bracelet rack and in the drawers.

I have a few of my purses on display, some hanging in my closet and the rest are in the wardrobe.

I debated putting a rug in the middle of the room but loved how clean, open, and airy it was.

And there you have it! I absolutely love waking up to this little DIY Closet Room and everything having its own place. My actual closet isn’t nearly as pretty so this area makes me happy! But for those wondering, here are pictures of my actual closet 🙂

I currently use our guest room as my closet room, thanks to the fact that our house was built in the late 60’s when apparently people didn’t own near the amount of clothing that I do! I know the number one thing that we’ll have when we build our home is a huge walk-in closet for me!

I had never even heard the term “closet room,” but I love it! Yours looks fabulous! Love the Mean Girls rug. 😉

My closet is a mess. Thanks for the inspiration. I esp need to do something with my shoes and the shelving is perfect for that. Thanks:-)

  • So dreamy, Samantha! Doesn’t it make you so happy having everything so organized?!

I am so jealous of your shoes and all the room you have. I have to share a little closet with my husband and I swear his clothes take up more room than mine!

So preeetttty <3. I'm excited for the closet I'll be getting (b/c I know I will ;)) in our future home. If that has to be a separate room, then I'll turn it into my sanctuary. Thanks for sharing! I've pinned this, too.

Ooooh I love the Billy bookcases! (Though mine are in my office…I don’t have nearly as many shoes as you!) That’s clever that you alternated the shoes so you could fit more on a shelf 🙂 This closet room turned out really pretty!

I need this room in my house, haha! I had a spare room that I’m going to be using for half office half closet and I cannot wait 🙂
I don’t have nearly as many shoes but I do have quite a few purses.
I think my favorite part of this room is the corner area with the floor length mirror and your necklaces!
