A weekend getaway to Marblehead, MA

Marblehead, Massachusetts has been on my list of charming coastal towns to explore for quite some time, and I’m so glad we finally made the trip this past summer. Just 16 miles from Boston, Marblehead is the perfect mix of New England charm and seaside relaxation. If you’re looking for a getaway with stunning views, historic streets to stroll, and delicious food and drink, consider booking your trip to Marblehead, MA.

We stayed at Hotel Marblehead; this boutique hotel was adorable and perfect for a weekend getaway. This Victorian home was built in 1871 and changed owners quite a few times over the years; at one point, Amelia Earhart and her mother were guests! Talk about history! The rooms were cozy and comfortable, and the breakfast spread each morning was such a treat—fresh pastries, coffee, and other goodies to fuel up for the day. The hotel offers bikes to ride around town, which we took full advantage of, riding through Marblehead’s charming streets and along the waterfront—it was such a fun way to explore!
For meals, we found some absolute gems. We ate at The Landing the first night and the views and vibes were immaculate, along with the food and drink. The next morning, we stopped at Mookie’s at Mugford for coffee and a breakfast sandwich after riding our bikes around the coast. And later that day, we ended up at The Barnacle for lunch! The Barnacle is also located on the water and we loved sitting out on the deck and taking in all the views. Get the steak tips; they marinate them for days and they were to die for!
On our bike ride, we visited Fort Sewall, a historic coastal fort with incredible history and views of the harbor, and Old Burial Hill, the cemetery made famous by Hocus Pocus.
But I think our favorite stop was Castle Rock Park. This 1.2-acre park is located off Ocean Avenue on Marblehead Neck (side note: the houses here are absolutely stunning, so make sure you drive around The Neck and take it all in!). Castle Rock Park gets its name from the castle-like private home next to the park. Once known as “Great Head,” Castle Rock served as a lookout for arriving and departing fishing fleets—and for spotting pirate and enemy ships, both British and French. The views were breathtaking, and we felt completely at peace taking it all in.
Don’t forget to set aside time to walk around Old Town Marblehead; this little downtown area is lined with shops, restaurants and bars. And oh so adorable!

Marblehead is the kind of place that encourages you to slow down, savor every moment, and enjoy the simple pleasures: good food, charming streets, and the calming presence of the water. Whether you’re planning a quick weekend escape or a longer coastal retreat, Marblehead is a town that will leave you refreshed, inspired, and already dreaming of your next visit.
