I always tell people I was born in the wrong decade; I picture myself in the 60’s as a hippie. Or the 50’s or 40’s. There’s just something about these eras that attract me and to be honest, the world just scares me more and more as time goes on. Those were the days when you could leave your doors open or let your kids play in the streets as long as they wanted and not have to worry about them not coming home. I know, there was still crime back then too but it seemed like a lot safer and a lot happier of a place.
Because of this, I’m somewhat of a history nerd. History was one of my favorite classes in school and yes, I love a good documentary on Netflix. When we lived in New York, there was an antique store in an old jail and it was one of the coolest places I’ve ever been. I could spend hours there if time allowed, just looking at different pieces and artifacts and asking the story behind them. I began to love all things vintage; especially fashion.
Finding inspiration from vintage wear is fun but actually finding it is even more amazing. When I discovered Sweet and Spark, I fell in love with the pieces they were selling but even more so with the story behind them and the jewelry.
The duo is a father-daughter team; Jillian’s dad does the dirty work on the East coast by sifting through flea markets, yard sales, and antique shops, while she remains on the West coast curating assortments of quality and affordable costume jewelry.
They tend to focus on gold classics by American designers from the 40’s-90’s. One of the coolest things about this is that gold plated jewelry back then used to be triple plated, allowing it to last longer without tarnishing as quickly as jewelry today.
I’m obsessed with my bangles; lightweight aluminum from West Germany, circa the 40s/50s. How cool is that? Not only do I love them but they are pretty much one of a kind. I just think that’s the coolest!
If you’re looking for a special piece for yourself or someone else, I highly suggest you check out their website. Jillian is even offering you all $10 off with the code HOOAHANDHICCUPS10. With Christmas right around the corner, this would make such a great gift for a mom or mother-in-law.
Get your spark on, friends 🙂
