The secret to falling in love.

6 years ago today, my husband asked me to be his girlfriend. He picked me up with flowers in hand and took me to dinner at a cute local restaurant. We had only known each other for a month or so and had only been hanging out a few weeks, but it was one of those things where “when you know, you know.” He had a cute little speech prepared about how he had never felt that way about anyone before and that he was falling in love with me. After weeks. And you know what? I said the same thing back to him.

We spent the next couple of weeks carving pumpkins, sitting around bonfires and falling in love. Cliche, but it’s true. And fall will forever remind me of those special few weeks we spent together.

A lot of people questioned us and doubted that we were really in love over lust. But I knew it. He knew it. And really that was all that mattered. I had been in “love” before and looking back, I may have been in love but in a different way. I’m not really sure what it was but I know it’s nothing like what I felt for him and what I continue to feel everyday. Even on our bad days or dark times, I love him with all of my heart.

So what’s the secret to falling in love?

Don’t play by any rules. In fact, there may be so many reasons why you shouldn’t love someone and shouldn’t be with someone but at the end of the day, you have to follow your heart. You have to be 110% in, no matter what; you can’t half ass it.

Let yourself fall. It’s normal to be scared and be afraid of getting hurt when you love someone so much. But you have to let yourself feel and you have to let yourself fall. Otherwise you’re hurting yourself and the potential relationship without even knowing it.

Believe me when I say; “when you know, you know.”  I didn’t believe anyone when they said that. Hell, I didn’t even know what that really meant. I mean, how could you really know unless you’ve been in that position? But trust me when I say, you will. You’ll just know.

Love is a wonderful thing. I’ve heard people say falling in love is easy, staying in love is hard. And while I agree with that to some extent, they can both have their challenges. But if you let go and trust in a force bigger than you, you’ll open up a door of possibilities.

Love can’t always be explained. Sometimes it makes no sense and sometimes it makes all the sense in the world. But my best advice? Don’t worry about any of that. Just worry about what you feel in your heart. Trust it. It won’t steer you wrong.
