The Secret to Looking Put Together

A very sweet reader commented on my post last week and asked me how I always look so put together. And while I won’t say I dress to the nines everyday, I do make an effort to get dressed and wear something I love. Why? Well two major reasons. 1) I’m more productive that way 2) I like fashion. Enough reason? Let me elaborate…

Clothes, jewelry, shoes, accessories…they make me happy. And that’s not meant to be superficial. All of it allows me to express myself and be creative in how I do it. I like challenges and I like to play dress-up… nothing wrong with that, right?!

So how do I always look so put-together? I’m about to spill my secrets. Ready?

I wash my hair every 2-3 days.

I always get dressed.

I always wear light, natural make-up.

I always wear jewelry.

Some secrets, huh? But for real, there’s not much to it! I have two small kids and it would be so easy to just throw on sweatpants and throw my hair in a top knot. And yes, some days my hair is in a top knot. But I like doing my hair, I like getting dressed, and I like putting on makeup. This doesn’t mean I dress like I’m going to the club or anything, but I think we all deserve to feel good about ourselves and for me, this is how I do it.

But sometimes it’s all in the jewelry. Wearing jewelry tops off any outfit and helps you to look polished. So when I was contacted by Stella & Dot to take a peek at their collection, I couldn’t wait to add some more pieces to my closet!

Let’s start from the beginning. The Plume necklace caught my eye immediately. Not only is is absolutely stunning the way it is, but the black feathers are interchangeable with blue ones!  And it can also be worn by itself, with no feathers whatsoever. So you’re essentially getting three different necklaces for the price of one. Cool huh?

Next I chose the Belle Silver Statement Necklace. I love love love to wear statement necklaces like this with t-shirts. Why? T-shirts are super comfortable and can absolutely be dressed up with a necklace, a chambray shirt, and some booties. In the fall I love to wear an open plaid shirt with a t-shirt, but you can also wear a jean jacket, leather jacket, whatever. T-shirts don’t have to be for slumming around the house. This necklace gave the outfit a little sparkle and turned it from to fab in no time.

And finally, my third choice was this Isa Disc Necklace. These colors just scream nice weather and I am so excited it’s going to finally start warming up around here. This necklace would be perfect with a plain white tank and some cutoffs in the summer, or even transitioning from winter to spring like you see me doing here. I’m telling you, sometimes jewelry makes the difference!

And there you have it. There are my secrets 🙂 But they aren’t really a secret at all! Sometimes having nice statement jewelry pieces can chance your entire look or outfit. There’s no formula to it but rather just experimenting and trying on what feels best. Remember how much fun it was to play dress-up as a little girl? I like to think of it as playing dress-up everyday. And that my friends certainly doesn’t make it hard 🙂
